Academy

Special Programs 2023

Besides individual lessons, ensemble coaching and rehearsals, lectures, discussions and other discourse programs, as well as a daily festival program with concerts, installations, presentations and music communication programs, the impuls Academy 2023 holds various Special Programs (open only for registered and accepted participants), that partly come along with selection and partly also need preparation in advance. We kindly ask you to read the descriptions and conditions as stated below first and contact us, if you should need any further information.

In case you are seriously intending to apply for one or more of these programs, please point them out to us already with your initial application (use titles as given) or announce your interest any time afterwards to office@impuls.cc. Please do keep track of the different deadlines for submitting specific application material for most of these specials in time. Please also note, that all compositions, scores, parts etc. have to be made available to impuls 2023 without charge for these programs, including rehearsals, possibly also performances at the impuls Festival and recordings made for archive reasons, and, if of interest, also to other impuls participants 2023 for reasons of studies, even if not mentioned explicitly below with each special program anyway.

Ensemble coaching by François Sarhan

impuls invites already existing formations (be it duos, trios or much larger ensembles) to specifically apply (on top of their general application for the Academy, which is the basis of any further application) for intense ensemble choaching by François Sarhan.

Special Program

for ensembles

What is needed for this additional application:

• interest to work also beyond the context of traditional composition (be it through performative, intermedia, contextual etc. means or beyond a purely instrumental approach)

• openess to also work with young composers on spot, selected through a seperate call for pieces or concepts with f.e. performative, scenic, mixed/multimedia, in situ, textual, contextual etc. approach

• openess to team- and processual working methods

• wishlist for pieces to work on during impuls with Sarhan

How to apply:

If interested, please briefly describe your motivation and, in case the ensemble has already worked on pieces/programs/projects corresponding to the focus, please briefly describe those as well. On top hand in further pieces/concepts (at least 3, name of composer and piece, plus, if possible, also score per pdf), you would very much like to work on, and possibly also present, during the impuls Academy with François Sarhan. All to be sent to office@impuls.cc, deadline January 15th , 2023. Notification on selection will be given until end of February 2023.

François Sarhan . Call for Scores and Concepts

The French composer, director and visual artist François Sarhan is especially noted for creating his own music-theatre and multimedia works, in which he himself often performs. With this call we invite impuls Academy participants, to hand in already existing pieces or concepts to be further developed at impuls.

Special Program

with François Sarhan

for composers

Please note: only pieces or concepts, that reach out for a f.e. performative, scenic, mixed/multimedia, in situ, textual, contextual etc. dimension are asked for at this specific call. In general, both solo pieces/concepts for soloists and any larger line-up are welcome. Multiple submissions are possible. In case objects, scenery, specific instruments or similar are needed, the composer has to provide them without charge. The composer is also willing to take care of technical needs, as no (sound-/video-) technician is available to accompany the whole process of production. Thus, we recommend to only hand in pieces/concept that donnot ask for a large technical set-up or similar.
If selected, there is young ensembles on spot to work with the composer on the pieces/concepts – under the guidance of François Sarhan for both – and possibly also present them at the impuls Festival.

As ensembles will only be selected by winter, the call comes in 2 steps:

Call A is open right away for pieces/concepts, that donnot ask for a specific line-up (such as for specific instruments, specific number of performers).

Call B is to be posted a bit later with specifications on the instruments as offered by the ensembles open for collaboration.
By now a Call for Concepts with Kollektiv Unruhe and François Sarhan is already onlineplease check here for more information.

How to apply:

1.) You have to register and be accepted as participant for the impuls Academy 2023 first. Please preannounce your interest in this special program (concern: François Sarhan Score and Concepts) to the impuls office (office@impuls.cc) or already with your initial Academy registration. Deadline for submission of pieces/concepts (please, if applicable, include also info on specifics such as f.e. technical details, specific stage needs etc.) Call A: February 1st, 2023 / Call B: March 15th, 2023

2.) The announcement of the decision is scheduled for April 15th, 2023. Selected pieces/concepts will then be sent to musicians in advance for orientation purposes, the actual coaching and work will take place during the Academy in Graz.

Kollektiv Unruhe / François Sarhan. Call for Concepts

For the impuls Academy and Festival 2023, the young Berlin based Kollektiv Unruhe hosts an open call for composers. The first stage of the call, the further development of the sketches/concepts before the Academy, and specifically the rehearsals and realization in Graz will be accompanied and coached by François Sarhan.

The six performers (plus conductor if needed) are hereby inviting to submit sketches and/or concepts for new pieces (with a final length not exceeding 5-8 minutes), plus a general project description as first step of the call (preferably being acoustic pieces for the whole lineup, but including at least 3 performers). Please also note: This specific call only asks for sketches/concepts/pieces that include for example a performative, scenic, mixed/multimedia, in situ, textual, contextual etc. dimension.

for composers

Multiple submissions are possible. In case objects, scenery, specific instruments anything similar would be needed, the composer must provide them without charge. The composer must also be willing to take care of any technical requirements, if needed at all, as no (sound-/video-) technician will be available to accompany the whole process of production. Thus, we recommend only handing in sketches/concept that do not ask for a large technical set-up or similar. Please also note that in the case of a planned piano preparation, it must be ensured that the piano is not damaged in any way. Depending on the applications, a selection of sketches/concepts might be necessary. As second phase Kollektiv Unruhe will then get in touch with the composers until end of March to discuss any further necessary preparation until the actual coworking period and further development of the works at the Academy, that will be coached by François Sarhan.

How to apply:

1.) You have to register and be accepted as participant for the impuls Academy 2023 first.

2.) If you would like to submit one or more proposals, please express your interest in this special program (concern: Kollektiv Unruhe - Sarhan) to the impuls office (office@impuls.cc) or already with your initial Academy registration.

3.) Sketches/concepts plus a general project description should then be sent to office@impuls.cc and kollektivunruhe@gmail.com as well as francois.sarhan@yahoo.fr until March 15th, 2023 at the latest. Kollektiv Unruhe will then get in touch with the composers directly as well for further information.

4.) Please note that participation is equivalent to one individual tutor’s lessons, thus composers, whose concepts/pieces will be further developed and worked on during impuls together with Kollektiv Unruhe and François Sarhan, will be granted only two more individual tutor’s lesson during impuls.

On Voices

Beat Furrer is one of the central figures in the international music szene, both as composer and conductor, as driving force behind a number of initiatives (including the founding of Klangforum Wien and the impuls Academy) and professor for composition. Almost from the very beginning, his creative work has focused on the human voice, be it in the context of opera and music theater, in ensemble, vocal ensemble, and choral works, or in solo compositions. He is also closely associated with Cantando Admont as interpreter of his works.

For impuls 2023 Beat Furrer and Cantando Admont offer a special program focusing on and discussing topics such as vocal traditions, microtonality, notation, intonation, tonality amongst others, from both a compositional point of view and from the point of view of the performers/singers. Submitted sketches and works with vocal parts handed in by impuls Academy participants selected for this program, will of course be integrated in this discussion. In addition, Beat Furrer will accompany and comment on the development of various of his works as part of the vocal program with Cantando Admont – another aspect and component of this special program for composers.

How to apply:
1.) As composer you have to register and be accepted as participant for the impuls Academy 2023 first. Please preannounce your interest in this special program (concern: On Voices) to the impuls office (office@impuls.cc) or already with your initial Academy registration. Vocalists participating in the Academy do not have to register for this special program.
2) Composers are asked to then hand in sketches or compositions with a voice part (be it for voice solo, a cappella, choir, opera, song or other genres) as pdf to office@impuls.cc by March 15th, 2023 at the latest. On basis of these applications a selection of final participants will be announced by the end of April 2023.
3) All selected composers are asked to then bring along the submitted works as printed scores to impuls.

KonzeptMusik

With Peter Ablinger one of the most profiled composers is tutoring at impuls. His artistic work is diverse. It includes the visual, installations, texts, conceptual, performative and situational works – and hereby and beyond of course music, including a lot of music on music. It involves research and statements - philosophical, perceptual-psychological, even political ones. It questions common topoi, conventions, role attributions. And it aims at fundamental questions: what is hearing, what is sound, what is music, what is time and space, what is the here and now?

Special Program

with Peter Ablinger

under the participation of Dimitrios Polisoidis

for composers and Others (sound and multimedia artists, performers, actors, dancers, instrument designers,..., as well as individual musicians)

In addition to the selected concept authors themselves, instrumentalists from PPCM (Performance Practice in Contemporary Music) at KUG are an integral part of this workshop, who are actively participating in the development and realization of the pieces. PPCM is a two-year master's program respectively a one-year postgraduate course at the Kunstuniversität Graz, whose central artistic subject is supervised by Klangforum Wien as professor. At impuls 2023 Klangforum member Dimitrios Polisoidis will coach the musicians of this Special Workshop and accompany the development of projects together with Peter Ablinger. On the participants side, aside from the PPCM instrumentalists, also other musicians are welcome to individually apply and join on selection.

Composition participants of the impuls Academy and Others (sound and multimedia artists, performers, individual musicians, actors dancers, instrument designers, ...) are invited to submit one or more (already existing or new) concept pieces, or precisely formulated ideas for concept pieces for open instrumentation, whereby the concepts must be realizable with a number of 1 to 5 performers/instrumentalists. An obligatory online meeting before impuls (12.4.2023, 6 pm CET) will then offer all pre-selected participants the opportunity to discuss their pieces, ideas and proposals in detail with Peter Ablinger, Dimitrios Polisoidis and Ute Pinter/impuls and to ask any open questions (e.g. on realization possibilities). The concepts finally selected after this meeting should, where necessary, be further developed before the start of impuls, then worked on, refined and realized during the impuls Academy with the participation of PPCM students (and possibly also with the involvement of the selected concept authors and individual musicians) and will, at least partially, be performed at the impuls Festival.

How to apply:

1.) As composer you have to register and be accepted as participants of the impuls Academy 2023, Others and individual musicians may specifically qualify for this workshop.

2.) If you would like to submit one or more concepts, or precisely formulated ideas for concepts, please send a short e-mail to office@impuls.cc (concern: KonzeptMusik) to announce your participation in advance or do so already with your initial Academy registration.

3.) Then send your concepts/concept ideas via e-mail to office@impuls.cc by March 25th, 2023 at the latest. In case your concept is selected and adjustments or further developments are needed still, the deadline for handing in the revised concepts is June 25th, 2023.
Please note: The pieces must be conceived for open instrumentation and can, for example, use performance, movement, improvisation and visual elements, objects, voice or other possibilities that go beyond the classical instrumental setting. Of course, classical instrumental play can also be considered, although the specific instruments available will only be announced quite shortly before impuls. Furthermore, the pieces can be conceived for a classical stage/concert program as well as for e.g. an indoor or outdoor installation. If technical support is necessary, it must be realized with simple or self-provided resources. Event-related technical conditions must also be considered, in order to ensure realizability (also in terms of performance, duration or setting).

4.) You are welcome to include examples of works in your application, that have already been realized and follow a similar conceptual approach (please provide links to f.e. performances, photos, concept scores, etc.).

5.) The participation in this workshop implies a time-consuming commitment and may make it impossible to actively participate in many of the other projects of the Academy. However, composers and sound artists will receive two additional individual lessons with a composition tutor (instead of three). For all others, taking part in this workshop will open up the possibility to use impuls as a general platform for exchange and networking and enjoy the Festival program as well as general Academy offers (please note, that individual lessons for musicians are not offered in 2023).

6.) If you need further information, please contact the impuls office at office@impuls.cc.

Expect the Unexpected: The Writing Game

Composition series such as DW Differenz/Wiederholung, Monadologie or more current also GAME are one characteristic for Bernhard Lang´s extensive artistic creation, researches and development. Starting with the SCAN-Project back in 2015, Lang together with Klangforum Wien tried to organize large-scale group improvisations based on his own existing compositions by formulating rule-sets for the improvisers. This led to the origin of “series six”, the GAME pieces, in 2016: while exploring the meaning of both Game and Play, they consist of musical Game-situations like card-games, and are to be considered as self-oranizing-systems (S.O.S), like most improvisations hereby omitting the conductor. They furthermore consist but of individual parts plus rulesets for playing with these.

Special Program

with Bernhard Lang

for composers

With the work session program at impuls 2023, Bernhard Lang intends to further explore the notions and concepts of gaming within the contexts of both improvisation and composing together with a group of up to 10 selected participants. Starting with an initial lecture on gaming (which is open to all Academy participants), the daily worksessions should then explore the notion of gaming, inventing new games, new rules, perhaps formulating a new game-piece in the end, in a small collaborative group structure. A final presentation, be it of a newly developed collective game-piece or a more theoretical discussion on the topic and the process of the working sessions, stands at the end of this collaboratory. On top it also comes along with one individual lesson with Bernhard Lang (where one of your works will be discussed in detail) and a group-visit to a contemporary art gallery, triggering an interdisciplinary discourse and matching aesthetic positions in different fields of the arts.
Taking part in this workshop implies a big engagement and might make it impossible to actively participate in some other projects during the workshop-days. Please note that the participation is equivalent to two individual tutor’s lessons, thus participating composers will be granted only one more individual tutor’s lesson during impuls.

How to apply:

1.) You have to register and be accepted as participant for the impuls Academy 2023 first. Please preannounce your interest in this special program (concern: Bernhard Lang GAME) to the impuls office (office@impuls.cc) or already with your initial Academy registration.
2.) Please hand in the score (pdf) of one work of yours, you would like to discuss with Bernhard Lang during your individual lesson (only one score will be accepted, the work of course must not stand in connection with a game concept) together with a statement motivating your participation in the GAME workshop (no concept for a game piece is obligatory, nor are pieces already realised in this direction, even though you are welcome to add your thoughts and works done along this line of course). Please also add information, in which way you could contribute as performer, maybe musician in the realisation of game pieces developed during the workshop (f.e. which instruments you can play and bring along, voice, acting etc.). Deadline for sending in all that information in one shot to office@impuls.cc is May 15th, 2023.

In-Situ – translucent spaces

The general idea and starting point of this project is the attempt to develop new definitions of musical spaces through happenings positioned on the borderline of concert, installation and performance. Space arises out of sound, is defined by sound – and vice versa: sound develops into a translucent space, which is influenced and shaped again also by the site, which by itself again is defined also by its own sounds, noises and specific conditions for a performance. But it is not only the space per se, but also the temporality of a site that is influenced and changed by sound and the sound´s own temporality.

Special Program

with Klaus Lang

for composers and sound artists (+ instrumentalists depending on concepts handed in)

A central point also for this special program is to work with what can be found at a specific site on spot, not to intrude and impose, and only carefully and gently interfere with what these sites unfold themselves, and to open up to new sounds that are already at least potentially existing at specific sites. Out of nothing so to say a huge, but dense net of sound spaces is spreading and also hereby defines a city – places like windows in another time and another space. Each participant selected decides on a specific place – we try to develope a concept together, which will both combine the various parts and actions, but also to some extent influence the further progress of the individual projects.

Conditions:

In-Situ – translucent spaces is a special program open to participants of impuls 2023. Selected composers and sound artists are expected not only to develope concepts, but also being open to perform themselves if needed within the group. If instrumentalists or instrumentalists as performers and protagonists should be needed for the realisation of the individual projects originating from this program, aside from workshop colleagues, also instrumentalists/ensemble members present at in impuls can of course be included depending however on their availability and interest (please note that it will be up to the composers and sound artists in the end, to find volunteers and arrange details with them).

In-Situ – translucent spaces is a special program of impuls 2023 open for approximately 10 composers and sound artists. Starting on July 24th, 2023 Klaus Lang will work with the participants selected on a daily basis and lead them from a conceptual phase through a working period until the final realisation of the individual projects (the final performance/realisation of all projects is scheduled for either August 2nd or 3rd, 2023 within the impuls Festival). As this program will be a very intense one, composers and sound artists alike, participating will only be offered one more lesson with another composition tutor. Please note that no individual coaching for musicians will be offered at impuls 2023. However, for all participants of the workshop, the opportunity opens up to use impuls as a general platform for exchange and networking and to attend the Festival and general Aademy programs.

How to apply:

1.) As composer you have to register and be accepted as composition participant of the impuls Academy 2023 first. Please preannounce your interest in this special program (concern: In-Situ – translucent spaces ) to the impuls office (office@impuls.cc) or already with your initial Academy registration. Sound artists may apply directly for this special and if selected will be included as Academy participants hereafter.

2.) As application material please send 2-3 of your scores (pdf) that you consider most relevant for your work. Deadline: March 25th, 2023 at the latest (sound artists must additionally include their general Academy application for Others). Please also mention, in which way you could contribute as performer (f.e. which instruments you play and could bring along, other performing abilities etc.)

3.) The selection of participants will then be announced by around end of April, 2023 at the latest.

CANCELLED: utrumque . Collaboratory

An ensemble up to a maximum of 20 members comprising a variety of musicians and composers of contemporary music will co-compose and perform a piece of electronic music using techniques and instruments developed by utrumque. The overall form of the composition, the positioning of the different sections in the venue, and the instruments available will be prepared by utrumque, but the composition of the individual sections and their performance will be the task of the participants. Put together, the sections will form a large-scale composition performed in several spaces inside and outside at the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics.

Special Program

with utrumque

Gerhard Eckel electronics

Ludvig Elblaus electronics

for composers, sound-artists, musicians and other artists familiar with contemporary music who are virtuosic listeners

Instruments

The musical practice of utrumque involves live manipulation of room-scale acoustic feedback using a variety of tools and approaches that contain the digital, the analog and the electro acoustic. The instruments provided will reflect this practice, so applicants can among other things expect to control a computer using a physical controller, play using a mixing desk, or manipulate an electronically augmented acoustic instrument, such as a double bass or a snare drum for instance.

Schedule

The work will be divided into three blocks. The first two days are full days for all participants, with a shared introduction to all components of the piece, the venue, the overall form, and the instruments available. The next three days will be half days for the participants, where they in smaller groups will compose and rehearse together with both Eckel and Elblaus individually. Finally, all participants will come together for the last two full days of general rehearsal and two days of concert performances.

How to apply:

We welcome composers, sound-artists, musicians and other artists to apply. However, please register for the impuls Academy 2023 first and announce your interest in this workshop (concern: utrumque Collaboratory). Composers must be accepted as Academy participants first in order to be able to qualify for this workshop, sound artists, individual instrumentalists and any others interested can apply only for this specific workshop. Putting together a suitable ensemble of applicants might require complementing the application with a short interview over video call before the final selection is made. There are no formal requirements, but applicants should be familiar with contemporary music and be virtuosic listeners, even if they are unfamiliar with live electronics or electronic music composition. Your application should comprise:

1.) Contact and biographical information

2.) A brief description of your musical practice, audio and video examples are most welcome as links

3.) A statement motivating your participation in the workshop

4.) As your applications will be used to put together an ensemble, please make sure to detail all performance experience and instrument proficiencies, and what instruments you could bring to Graz, in your application

Please submit your workshop application via e-mail to office@impuls.cc and impuls@utrumque.com by April 15th, 2023 at the latest. Notification about acceptance will then be given by May 15th, 2023.

Taking part in this workshop implies a big engagement and might make it impossible to actively participate in many other projects, at least during the workshop-days. Please note that the participation is equivalent to two individual tutor’s lessons, thus participating composers and also sound artists will be granted only one more individual tutor’s lesson during impuls. For all others, taking part in this workshop will open up the possibility to use impuls as a general platform for exchange and networking and enjoy the Festival program as well as general Academy offers (please note, that individual lessons for musicians are not offered in 2023).

Performing augmented reality . Call for new solo Electronic Music

Solo performance practice in Electronic Music is traditionally linked to the idea of a performer operating on a laptop, whereas composing electroacoustic music is an activity that offers countless sonic paradigms, such as the use of amplification, the transformation of the timbre of an acoustic instrument, the use of sound spatialisation etc.

Special Program

with Davide Gagliardi

for composers

But is it possible to compose a solo electronic music performance without the laptop being the center of the attention? Is it possible to interact with a digital world without pressing a button? How can we build a sonic relationship between common objects and digital technologies? Can an electronic musician be a performer as much as an instrumentalist?

The aim of this call is to develop new solo Electronic Music repertoire with a strong performative profile which brings the electronic musician away from the laptop’s screen, focusing on her/his stage presence, reflecting upon the role of the digital media in a music performance and considering technology as active and creative element of our everyday practice.

Selected participants will develop a piece (less than 10 minutes) in collaboration with Davide Gagliardi, Professor of Multimedia at the Conservatory of Milan, composer, performer and sound director of the Schallfeld Ensemble, who will accompany and support the development of the selected projects from a performative and technical point of view, i.e. providing assistance during the software development process, discussing about notation, and performing the piece.

The call is particularly welcoming composers who have so far focused on instrumental music and who are not necessarily familiarised with music software development yet. But of course also composers already familiar with electronic music are welcome to join.

Timeframe and Workshop-structure:

The selected participants will discuss the project with Davide Gagliardi as both tutor and performer of the pieces at impuls in private online sessions several months before the beginning of the Academy, where the main aesthetic idea and the development of the performance will be discussed also from a technical point of view.
During the impuls Academy, the pieces of the selected composers will then be rehearsed and discussed together with Davide Gagliardi, in both solo and group sessions, resulting in a workshop presentation. The number of participants is subject to the time available and thus the number of places is limited. However, all composers applying are welcome to follow the rehearsals and process on spot.

with Davide Gagliardi

for composers and Others (sound and multimedia artists, performers, actors, dancers, instrument designers,..., as well as individual musicians)

These questions might touch a review of electroacoustic and electronic works from a compositional and technical point of view, or how to notate the electronics in a score, or to get a guidance on how to set up multimedia environment from a software and hardware point of view, or a guidance on everything, which is related to performing electronic music in chamber music, orchestral and solo instrument setup. Questions might of course as well relate to amplification strategies and techniques, or reviews of Max, PureData and Supercollider patches ...

 How to apply:

1.) You have to register and be accepted as participant of the impuls Academy 2023 first. Please preannounce your interest in this special program (concern: 1:1 Meeting with Davide Gagliardi) to the impuls office (office@impuls.cc) or already with your initial Academy registration.

2.) Please hand in a short info on the topic you want to discuss to both office@impuls.cc and info@davidegagliardi.eu. In case scores etc. are involved, please do send them along as well (pdf). There is no selection procedure coming along with this workshop, but. in case of space problems the order of registration is relevant. Please donnot sign up later than 15.6. 2023.

Klangforum Wien + Johannes Kalitzke . Reading Sessions

On top of premiering 4 new impuls commissions on August 2nd, 2023, Klangforum Wien and its conductor Johannes Kalitzke offer a full day with Reading Sessions for young composer participants of the impuls Academy on August 3rd, 2023, where, amongst others, questions on formal and esthetic aspects, notation and instrumentation are discussed.

Special Program

with Klangforum Wien

and

Johannes Kalitzke

for composers

How to apply:

1.) You have to register and be accepted as participant for the impuls Academy 2023 first. Please preannounce your interest in this special program (concern: Klangforum) to the impuls office (office@impuls.cc) or already with your initial Academy registration.

2.) The works can, but must not necessarily be written for this specific occasion. Also sketches or even part of works can be handed in. Of course your work also does not have to include all instruments mentioned in paragraph 3., but can be written for a smaller instrumentation. However it needs to convey the character of an ensemble piece – thus no small (chamber) music pieces will be accepted.

3.) The instruments available for the reading sessions are as follows (one musician per instrument only!): 1x flute, 1x oboe, 1x clarinet, 1x bassoon, 1x saxophone, 1x horn, 1x trumpet, 1x trombone, 1x accordion, 1x harp, 1x piano, 1x percussion, 1x violin, 1x viola, 1x cello, 1x double bass

4) As to percussion: only a small percussion set will be made available by Klangforum Wien and impuls. In case your piece should really require any other percussion instruments, you need to supply them yourself; same holds true for specific sound objects or other devices.

5.) Please also note that neither electronic equipment nor amplification is available.

6.) Scores (printed or well readable hand writing) must be sent as pdf to office@impuls.cc until April 30th, 2023 at the latest.

7.) A commission, consisting of members of Klangforum Wien, will then choose some of the works handed in. The composers selected will be given notification by May 31st, 2023, and might be asked to also deliver the parts until June 30th, 2023 as pdf to office@impuls.cc. In any case the composers selected will have to bring along both score and parts as printed version to impuls, and agree, that the score will be made available to the other participants attending.

8.) The impuls Reading Sessions with Klangforum Wien and its conductor will take place on August 3rd, 2023. In addition to that, if possible, a lunch for further discussions is planned during the break that day. All impuls participants, be it composers or instrumentalists, are invited and welcome to attend the Reading Sessions, profit from this program and participate in the discussions coming along with it.

The ensemble hand werk, based in Cologne, is known for placing its craft, as well as care for the composition and quality of the interpretation in the foreground of the work. The ensemble welcomes pieces that were only played once and then forgotten and is open to works with a rather serious and/or performative character. The Pierrot plus percussion instrumentation of the ensemble is often augmented by everyday objects, self-made or electronic.

Decoder Ensemble . Call for Projects . Composer Workshop + Concert

The Decoder Ensemble, founded in 2011 in Hamburg, is one of the most innovative and unpredictable representatives of the international new music scene – in 2023, it is now present at impuls amongst others with a special workshop lasting for several days. For Decoder, cross-genre collaborations are as much part of its profil as persuing a broad musical spectrum ranging from experimental instrumental music and multimedia set-ups to performance and conceptual art. The musicians of the ensemble are proven specialists in the field of contemporary music, and the majority also work as composers. Thus, instead of the usual separation of production and interpretation, an intensive exchange is the first priority.

For impuls the ensemble is looking for new or already existing, preferably multidisciplinary concepts that will be developed with Decoder during the course of the Academy from July 24th to 29th. On July 30th, a discursive concert evening with Decoder Ensemble will take place within the framework of a workshop concert, presenting the works (possibly as works in progress). Composition participants of the impuls Academy as well as “Others” (such as sound and multimedia artists, performers, musicians, actors, dancers, instrument designers ...) are invited to submit one or more (already existing or new) concepts for this workshop.

Special Program

with Decoder Ensemble

Leopold Hurt (e-)zither, conducting, performance

Andrej Koroliov piano, keyboard, performance

Carola Schaal B flat clarinet, performance

Sonja Lena Schmid cello, performance

Stefan Troschka electronics, sound direction, performance

Jonathan Shapiro percussion, performance

for composers, sound and multimedia artists, performers, individual musicians, actors, dancers, instrument designers …

How to apply:

1.) As composer you have to register and be accepted as participant for the impuls Academy 2023, Others can qualify specifically for this workshop.

2.) If you would like to submit one or more concepts or concretely formulated ideas for concepts, please announce your interest in this special program (concern: Decoder Call for Projects) to office@impuls.cc or do so directly when registering for the Academy.

3.) The instrumental line-up of the Decoder Ensemble consists of: 1x cello, 1x B flat clarinet, 1x piano/keyboard, 1x electric zither, 1 percussion, 1 x electronics. This instrumentation can be referred to, but the musicians are equally open to open scores and concepts with performance as well as movement elements, visual parts, objects, voice, etc. The works should be able to be performed by 4-6 people (including electronics/sound direction). A list of available percussion instruments can be found here, information on the electric zither here. Electronics: Software MaxMSP, Ableton-Live, Logic, further programme options by arrangement (Operating System MacOS Sierra); maximum 4-channel (clarify speaker positioning in advance!). In principle, amplification for all instruments is possible and desirable, as is the inclusion of multimedia. Wireless Clicktrack can be used. Please also note that in the case of a planned piano preparation, it must be ensured that the piano is not damaged in any way. Special instruments may have to be supplied by the participants themselves.

4.) The duration of the individual concert contributions on July 30th is approx. 10 min. However, the concepts can also exceed this duration or generally go beyond the conventional concert framework; in this case, excerpts and “work in progress” will be presented.

5.) To apply, please send your concepts/your concept ideas and an artistic curriculum vitae to office@impuls.cc by March 15th, 2023 at the latest (concern: Decoder Call). You are welcome to add examples of already realised works (please include links to performances, photos, concept scores, etc. in that case).

6.) A binding online meeting before impuls, scheduled for April 18th, 2023, at 6 p.m. CET, offers all pre-selected participants the opportunity to talk about the pieces, ideas and proposals more in detail and furthermore discuss open questions (e.g. on implementation possibilities) with the Decoder Ensemble. All concepts, that are finally selected after this meeting, will be developed by the Decoder Ensemble during the impuls Academy and, at least partially, performed at the impuls Festival.

7.) If you need further information, please contact the impuls office at office@impuls.cc.

Drum set in Contemporary Music

In his workshop Jonathan Shapiro, percussionist of the Decoder Ensemble, gives an insight into the history of the drum set and its use in contemporary music. Not only topics such as the exploration of extended playing techniques and sounds or the expansion with additional instruments, objects and electronics will be addressed, but so will the discourse on current directions in contemporary music using the drum set. On top Jonathan Shapiro will present excerpts of pieces on the drum set, but also participants are invited to perform pieces for drum set themselves or to bring along corresponding compositions.

Neko3 . Open Call

For the impuls Academy and Festival 2023, the Danish ensemble NEKO3 hosts an open call for composers, sound and multimedia artists, performers, individual musicians, actors, dancers, instrument designers, or any other creators regardless of their discipline.

The ensemble consists of three performers, who have a classical training as two percussionists and a pianist, but nowadays they work without regard to medium – ideas come first. Their core repertoire features both electronic music, performance art, cross-genre art (such as installations or sound art) and contemporary classical music. The call is therefore open for ideas and styles of almost any kind. The applicant can propose anything from small musical ideas to longer works, as scores or as conceptual thoughts in text format. Rather than finding complete works to be presented in a concert, the ensemble would like to act as a development lab for the applicants’ raw ideas, and to get to know the creators as artists and people through working with and collaboratively developing ideas with them.

Whether being selected or not, each applicant will have the possibility for a short feedback session with the ensemble during the Academy.

How to apply:

1.) As composer you have to register and be accepted as participant for the impuls Academy 2023 first. Other artists (Others) can apply & qualify specifically for the workshop.

2.) If you would like to submit one or more proposals, please preannounce your interest in this special program (concern: Call NEKO3) to the impuls office (office@impuls.cc) or already with your initial Academy registration.

a) a freeform description of the workshop proposal

b) a short curriculum vitae

c) one or more example(s) of applicant’s previous work

d) a technical rider featuring the equipment / instruments the applicant would need (try to be as detailed as possible, and we will contact You, if we require further information). Hereby Ex-Sentia follows the desire to reach deep into today's music and open the doors also to experimentation in terms of sound, while maintaining the link with the traditional instrumental era.

Please note that in both cases a trio-line-up is called for (thus all three musicians need to be included, be it with their specific instruments or as performers in other ways).
The instrumental pool consists of the following instruments:

PA and beamer are available (for rehearsals small PA/2 channels and video beamer). Hereby the composer together with the trio needs to be willing to take care of technical needs, as no (sound-/video-) technician is available to accompany the whole process of production.
Selected composers will not only work with Trio Ex-Sentia on their pieces respectively have the chance to test out their handed in sections and develop them further on with the trio, but will also get valuable feedback respectively accompaniment on their composition process by composition tutor Marco Stroppa.

A selection will then be made by May 20th, 2023 and individual parts (in case of already finished compositions) might be asked for until June 6th, 2023 where needed. Composers agree to bring along both score/sections of score and parts in duplicate in a printed version to the impuls Academy in July. All material must be made available to the ensemble and impuls free of charge. The selected composers also agree that recordings may be made for documentation purposes, especially in case the piece might be performed in the end.
3.) Please note that the composition coaching by Marco Stroppa for this Special Program will be valid one tutor lesson.
