Quo Vadis Teufelsgeiger? – Free Improvised Music and Coaching for Musicians

Lecture / Workshop by Reinhard Gagel and Maria Gstättner

At the University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna a research project (financed by FWF Austrian Science Fund) has been established in 2010. Its central practical work deals with free improvisation. Free improvisation is less regarded as a certain style but rather as the freedom of exhausting the musician’s own possibilities to invent music at the very moment, to develop music for oneself and together with others, and to perform it. Sounds and techniques deriving from contemporary music thereby play an equally important role as traditional sound material. The goal is to expand the experience of performing music for students of concert music and orchestra musicians in order to provide them with new sound experiences and competences, but also to strengthen both their self-confidence towards making music and their pleasure of being musicians. This project is designed as a pilot and research project and comprises improvisation classes in small and large formations and accompanying coaching interviews. In these interviews the musicians are questioned about their experiences in the current improvisation sessions, the statements are then analyzed in relation to the musicians´ education and their professional experiences. The qualitative study is supposed to record, collect and describe a broad field of characteristics in order to strengthen improvisation as an artistic method in cultural contexts and in education. The researchers are musicians as well as artistic explorers and understand their task as artistic research in which media, music and language, reflection and performance form a methodological combination. In the actual lecture the project will be introduced and discussed in an open artistic discourse; practical musical experiments and explorations are planned as well. For this reason instruments should be brought along.

The Lupophone – the new Wolf bass oboe

Workshop by Martin Bliggenstorfer

With this workshop I want to present the newly developed bass oboe built by the firm of Wolf. During the three years of development, the producer created an instrument that opens up completely new possibilities. So, for instance, the acoustic construction of the tube bore enables the player to get a broad range of dynamics, equality of the registers and a full round oboe sound. The builder also took care that the junction between the fingerings and the keys are working fluently, thus allowing to play in a virtuosic way. In comparison to other models of the low oboe family (Bariton oboe, Heckelphone) it is possible to play the Lupophone down to the low F2 – a good reason, why the Lupophone is called base oboe.
During my master research at the Conservatory of Amsterdam I have been working on a study of the technical possibilities of the Lupophone, with special regard to contemporary and experimental play techniques. Therewith I want to give notice of this novelty and also motivate composers to write new compositions for this instrument.
With this Lupophone Workshop at impuls I will present and demonstrate the results of my research.

Complexity – Cosmologies – Neuroscience – New architecture and visions of Contemporary Music

Lecture by Peter Oswald

Edgar Varèse was the first composer who – already back in the 20ies – demanded that (natural) sciences and advanced artistic thinking need to be brought together and combined. The titles of his works hereby already unfold his thinking that included mathematics, physics and even thermo-dynamics. During the last two decades implications of natural science grew in its importance also for the arts. Composers such as Héctor Parra or Richard Barrett are authorities on astrophysical and cosmological theories that also play an important role in their main compositional works.
A new topic, which is also of growing importance in general, is the knowledge about complex systems. It is evident, that complexity is not only bound to Ferneyhough, but also to composers such as Furrer, Neuwirth, Lachenmann, Posada and of course also Ligeti (Ligeti by the way was friend of the important mathematician Heinz-Otto Peitgen, who published a standard reference on fractal.
Also neurosciences do play a decisive role by now – and we must name composers like Olga Neuwirth (miramondo multiplo and Lost Highway), Marcelo Toledo and Salvatore Sciarrino (Morte di Borromini) in this context.
The category of space again has gained importance through Gustav Mahler, later on through  Stockhausen, Berio, Boulez, Nono ... and nowadays also through advanced exponents of live-elektronics, but also composers such as Kyburz, Furrer and others.
