Academy

Conditions 2027

Participation fee:

• Beyond the various offers the Academy holds, the Participation fee also includes free Festival access, but does not cover any form of travelling, visas, insurances, lodging, meals or similar.

• The Participation fee consists of two parts: a Registration fee and an Academy fee.

• The Registration fee of € 120,- * must be transferred to the account of Verein impuls as soon as you have been accepted as participant for the Academy (thus: do not transfer any fee before you have actually been accepted as regular participant by us!). It is a non-refundable, obligatory fee and has to be paid in any case (also in case of cancellation). It guarantees, that impuls reserves a place for you and handles further preparations for your Academy participation until also the payment of the Academy fee is completed (with deadline as chosen by you on registration).

• As Academy fee for composers, electronic, sound, multimedia and other artists, as well as individual musicians applying, we offer three price categories, depending on when you want to cover it (thus it is up to you to choose the payment category on registration):

Early Payment: Registration fee € 120,-* + Academy fee € 250,-
(total € 370,- / * Registration fee immediately due on acceptance + Academy fee due to September 10th, 2026 at the latest)

Regular Payment: Registration fee € 120,-* + Academy fee € 310,-
(total € 430,- / * Registration fee immediately due on acceptance + Academy fee due to November 10th, 2026 at the latest)

Late Payment: Registration fee € 120,-* + Academy fee € 380,-

(total € 500,- / * Registration fee immediately due on acceptance + Academy fee due to January 10th, 2027 at the latest)

Costs for chamber music formations/ensembles applying: the Registration fee is to be calculated per musician+conductor (if any), the Academy fee however varies depending on the number of musicians+conductor (if any) involved per ensemble/chamber music formation (f.e. for trios: 3x Registration fee + 2x Academy fee / for quartet: 4x Registration fee + 2,5 x Academy fee / for quintet: 5x Registration fee + 3x Academy fee, etc.). Please note that transfers for chamber music formations/ensembles must be carried out jointly in the form of one transfer per formation (and not individually per member). Deadlines for payments are as applying for composers mentioned above.

Costs for vocalists applying: since there are two modules for vocalists - module A (vocal ensemble) covers the coaching period from 14.-19.2.2027 (arrival on 13.2. or by noon on 14.2. at the latest; departure on 20.2.), while module B (vocal ensemble and soloistic performance) covers the entire duration of the Academy (arrival on 8.2., departure on 20.2.2027) — there are different Academy fees applying:

Early Payment: module A: Registration fee € 120,-* + Academy fee € 65,-
(total € 185,- / * Registration fee immediately due on acceptance + Academy fee due to September 10th, 2026 at the latest)

module B complies with the composers´ conditions.

Regular Payment: module A: Registration fee € 120,-* + Academy fee € 95,-
(total € 215,- / * Registration fee immediately due on acceptance + Academy fee due to November 10th, 2026 at the latest)

module B complies with the composers´ conditions.

Late Payment: module A: Registration fee € 120,-* + Academy fee € 130,-

(total € 250,- / * Registration fee immediately due on acceptance + Academy fee due to January 10th, 2027 at the latest)

module B complies with the composers´ conditions.

In case vocalists of module A want to arrive already before 13.2. for the Festival program (but without applying also for soloistic performance choaching): please check about the cost of upgrading the Festival pass with us.

Please also note, that string quartets/chamber music formations/ensembles applying are expected to take care of a substitute themselves in case of cancellation of one of their members (even though impuls might be able to suggest a musician for replacement as well).

• For vocalists only: in addition to the Registration Form for vocalists and Curriculum Vitae, please note, that also a repertoire list + voice type/vocal range + links to recordings (1.) Lied or aria from the Baroque and Classical periods to the 20th century + 2.) at least one contemporary (solo) work) have to be sent to office@impuls.cc.

For saxophonists: in addition to the Registration form for musicians and curriculum vitae, please note, that also a repertoire list with five contemporary pieces (solo or chamber music) you currently work on or you have been working on recently + links to recordings (if available) + list of instruments you can actually bring along to impuls have to be sent to office@impuls.cc.

For pianists: in addition to the Registration form for musicians and curriculum vitae, please note, that 2-3 links of relevant recordings are needed, and we ask you to also mention a couple of pieces, you would like to bring along to impuls and work on (please mention and then prepare at least three contrasting works after 1945, including one you consider a "classic” and one recent one from your country of birth/residence/studies).

• For electronic, sound, multimedia and other artists: In addition to the relevant application form and a curriculum vitae, please submit information on your artistic focus and work. If you wish to participate in the impuls Academy 2027 only if selected for either the special program “Hybrid Music In Situ” with Stefan Prins or “Expanded Music” with Simon Steen-Andersen or "K!ART . Call for Concepts, Sketches, Bits & Pieces" with ensemble K!ART, please inform us about this fact on registration, and then submit in time the material as required for one (or both) of these special program(s).

• In the event of a cancellation, you must notify the impuls office immediately at office@impuls.cc, even if you have not yet paid the Participation fee (and also, in case you are only on a waiting list or in case you have not even covered the Registration fee yet). The same holds true in case problems with payment emerge.

Special Programs:

• Please let us know (if possible, already when you register for the Academy / also late entries are possible of course), which of the Special Programs you would like to take part in by mentioning the title(s), and be aware of possible deadlines coming along with these programs.

• Information on further Special Programs will be updated on our homepage continuously and already accepted participants will be notified accordingly.

• It is possible to apply for several Special Programs, but please sign up only for those, you are really interested in, willing to meet the conditions and that you are willing to participate if selected.

• Please note, that all compositions, scores, sketches, parts etc. have to be made available to impuls 2027 without charge for these programs, including rehearsals, possibly also performances at the impuls Festival and recordings made for archive reasons, and, if of interest, also to other impuls participants 2027 for reasons of studies, as well as to the coaches of impuls 2027.

Further Application Infos:

• As the number of applicants often exceeds the number of available places, we recommend to apply as soon as possible. Notification of acceptance is given continuously in most cases (specially in case of composers and specially where candidates are equally qualified), but not later than December 10th, 2026. In case acceptance cannot be guaranteed immediately on application or even until December 10th, impuls maintains a waiting list, as it is not unlikely, that places still open up also at a later stage, f.e. through cancellations. In case you donnot wish to remain on the waiting list, please do inform us immediately at office@impuls.cc, so we can withdraw your application completely. As to chamber music formations/ensembles, we expect applications and decisions already during summer 2026, if not earlier, so preparation can start for potential working-programs, calls and similar.

• In concern of scholarships, we need to ask you to check funding possibilities yourself (such as regional/national funding, stipends of your university, exchange programs, embassy, foundations, ...).

• In general chamber music formations/ensembles must provide sheet music themselves for all pieces, they want to work on during impuls. If asked for, they also have to provide in time a conductor's score for impuls and its coaches for preparation. Same holds true for individual musicians and vocalists, who bring in pieces, they want to work on. Exceptions to this agreement could for example concern works by participating Academy composers or works suggested by impuls directly - in these cases sheet music is of course supplied by impuls.

• In general chamber music formations/ensembles/musicians/electronic and other artists have to bring along their own instruments. impuls however might be able to help out e.g. with double basses, percussion instruments, and, of course, pianos – however, this requires corresponding prior agreements and confirmation in time.

• Main language of instruction: English, but also other languages depending on necessities, participants and tutors.

• As for example rehearsals of chamber music/ensemble literature or the development of Special Programs and various other projects follow an ongoing schedule and lead to public performances in many cases, all participants are expected to stay for the whole period of the Academy (8.2.2027 arrival day, 20.2.2027 departure day). Participants are thus obliged to discuss possibilities of exceptions with the impuls office at office@impuls.cc beforehand respectively on registration, if a shorter stay is intended.

Lodging:

• Participants must take care of, reserve, book and pay for their accommodation and travels themselves! Infos on a hotel offering special rates for impuls participants will be given to you on acceptance and payment of registration fee - if of interest to book there, contact the hotel directly and check availability as soon as possible (please make sure you mention, that you are part of impuls 2027). If you should need additional help, feel free to contact us at office(at)impuls(dot)cc, so we can provide you with information on other accomodation possibilities or get in touch with the Tourist Office in Graz directly.

Insurances and Visa:

• Participants have to take care of their own health insurances valid in Austria.

• Participants also need to check visas themselves, if obligatory. Please make sure, that you have all papers and documents necessary prepared in time. If you should need any confirmation from impuls for your participation in the Academy, please contact us in time at office@impuls.cc.

• In addition, we recommend (especially with regard to e.g. a possible pandemic) to also check travel and cancellation insurances for your trip.

Additional Conditions:

• impuls reserves the right to make any necessary changes (in particular a change of Academy contents or coaches). A change does not open the possibility to withdraw from the Academy or claim compensation. Registration is binding upon receipt of the application form by impuls. This implies, that any cancellation of registration has to be reported to the impuls office at office@impuls.cc in any case – even if the Academy and/or Registration fee has not been covered yet.

Additional Conditions regarding possible epidemics respectively pandemics such as COVID:

• The Academy participants are obliged to independently comply with all statutory regulations and requirements and to inform themselves accordingly (e.g. about travel conditions or potential vaccination and test obligations).

• Alike they are also obliged to comply with any additional requirements and prevention concepts (such as those of the event locations, especially the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz).

• Should impuls have to cancel the Academy due to an epidemic / pandemic, Registration and Academy fees paid already will be returned to participants, that are still registered at that time (minus transfer fees). In the event of cancellation by the participant or staying away (unless forced by a legal travel ban due to the pandemic), the usual cancellation conditions apply.

Cancellation:

Any cancellation after acceptance by impuls: Registration fee has to be paid in any case.

Cancellation after November 10th, 2026: aside from the Registration fee, impuls is also entitled to request respectively to keep the Academy fee. Thus a refund is not possible, unless the place is taken by an equivalent applicant from the waiting list or by other potential candidates acceptable to impuls (the Registration fee remains non-refundable in any case).
