Rebecca Saunders, composition

Due to personal reasons Rebecca Saunders unfortunately had to cancel her participation as tutor at the impuls Academy 2019.

We kindly ask for your understanding!

A leading international compositional voice of her generation, Saunders´ music has been recognised with numerous awards including most recently a GEMA Music Prize for Instrumental Music, the renommierten Mauricio Kagel Musikpreis 2015, the British Composer Music Award for the trumpet concerto "Alba" in 2016 and in 2017 the Royal Philharmonic Society Award für

Saunders was born in London in 1967 and studied composition in Edinburgh with Nigel Osborne and with Wolfgang Rihm in Germany. She lives in Berlin and is a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts and the Sachsen Academy of Arts in Dresden. Since 2003 she has pursued an intense interest in the sculptural and spatial properties of organised sound: "chroma" (2003-2013) and "Stasis" (2011/16) are expanding spatial collages of up twenty-four chamber groups and sound sources set in radically different achitectural spaces; "Insideout", a 90-minute collage for a choreographed installation, was her first work for the stage and was created in collaboration with Sasha Waltz. In 2016 her extended violin converto "Still" was performed in collaboration with the choreographer Antonio Rúz, the dancers of Sasha Waltz & Guests, Carolin Widmann, the Junge Deutsch Philharmonie and Sylvain Cambreling.
2013 - 2017 she wrote an expansive series of solos for individual performers, simultaneously pursuing her interest in the concertante form, writing in 2014 "Void" for double percussion and orchestra, a trumpet concerto "Alba" in 2015, and most recently "Skin" for soprano and large ensemble, which was premiered in 2016.

"Skin", her first in an extended series of compositions with soprano, was followed in 2017 by the 85-minute spatial installation composition for soprano, 19 soloists and conductor written for performance at the Berlin Philharmonie and for St. Eustache in Paris.

Rebecca Saunders will be tutoring at impuls from February 11th to 18th.
