Johannes Schwarz, bassoon

Johannes Schwarz, born in 1970, has been a shareholder of the Ensemble Modern since 2003. Apart from regularly performing as a substitute in renowned radio and symphony orchestras, he performed for several years in baroque ensembles on original instruments. As a bassoonist, he has performed with radio big bands as well as various improvisation ensembles. His CD productions feature works for solo bassoon premiered by him as well as classical and baroque music, but also tango arrangements, pop and heavy metal music. His most recent solo CD, "più", featuring world premieres for bassoon and live electronics, was produced as a Surround-SACD and released by Ensemble Modern Medien in 2009. As a music educator, he has taught chamber music and bassoon at the Academies in Essen and Cologne, and is currently a docent of the International Ensemble Modern Academy at the Music Academy Frankfurt. He gives several workshops annually at music academies and international festivals, focusing on bassoon, reed-making and chamber music. Since 2004 he has been active in the ›Response Projects‹ at schools in Hessen, supported by the state of Hessen, and in the Frankfurt school projects of the Altana Foundation. Since 2009, he has been the Ensemble Modern member responsible for the organisation of the annual master course "Klangspuren" in Schwaz (Tyrol) which feature renowned artists like Heinz Holliger, Johannes Staud, Martin Matalon, Unsuk Chin and George Benjamin. In addition to his activities with Ensemble Modern, he has several projects of his own: "soundspaces", a duo programme for bassoon / saxophone / electronics together with saxophonist Sascha Armbruster (Basel) and a duet-program with the bassoonist Malte Refarth. He is currently working on an audio sound archive for the bassoon, recording every sound of this instrument for a digital database and publishing them online.
