Ernest Rombout, oboe

"The course will cover the entire repertory from baroque to contemporary music. For example: how can music by Mozart be played authentically on a modern oboe and what aspects of early music can help us perform contemporary music in all its diversity? How does one handle microtonality on the oboe?" (Ernest Rombout)

Ernest Rombout was born in 1959 in the Netherlands. He studied with Heinz Holliger at University of Music Freiburg, where he graduated „cum laude” in 1984. After that he continued his studies with Maurice Bourgue and Nikolaus Harnoncout.

Already during his studies, he won an international competition for oboe in Ancona (Italy) und in 1983 he performed as a soloist at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw for the first time, where he played the oboe concerto by Richard Strauss. Teaching is his vocation: since 1985 he is a professor at the Conservatory Utrecht and in the meantime also in Amsterdam and Vienna (MUK). Ernest Rombout performed all over Europe with great success and also at international festivals such as the Biennale Venezia, Donaueschingen Festival, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and the Takefu Music Festival in Japan. Besides he has done several tours in Germany and his first USA-tour with the Mozart oboe concerto in 1990. He has played with renowned orchestras such as the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (oboe concerto nr. 3 by Bruna Maderna), the Wiener Streichersolisten, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Prague Chamber Orchestra and the Zagreb Soloists and also with conductors like Christopher Hogwood, Heinz Holliger, Ernest Bour, Marc Foster, Ed Spanjaard, Jaap van Zweden and Leif Segerstam. For the label DECCA, Ernest Rombout recorded his first solo CD with the oboe concertos by Haydn and Mozart with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Besides his work as a soloist, he is also member of the Nieuw Ensemble Amsterdam (contemporary music) and the Atlas Ensembles (contemporary music with instruments and music styles from Europe and countries along the Silk Road). He gives Masterclasses among others in London, Graz, Moscow, Lausanne and Liechtenstein. Ernest Rombout is an active advocate for contemporary oboe music. Many composers like Luca Francesconi, Stefano Bellon, Richard Rijnvos, Seung-Ah Oh, Chikage Imae and Anthony Cheung have written for and dedicated compositions to him.
