impuls . 12th International Ensemble and Composers Academy for Contemporary Music | 2021

SPECIAL ACADEMY PROGRAMS

Besides individual lessons, ensemble coaching and rehearsals, lectures, discussions and other discourse programs, as well as a daily festival program with concerts, installations, presentations  and music communication programs, impuls holds various Special Programs (open only for registered respectively accepted participants of the impuls Academy 2021), that partly come along with selection and partly also need preparation in advance. We kindly ask you to read the descriptions and conditions as stated below first and contact us, if you should need any further information.

In case you are seriously intending to apply for one or more of these programs, please point them out to us already with your initial application (use titles as given) or announce your interest any time afterwards to office(at)impuls(dot)cc. Please do keep track of the different deadlines, for submitting specific application material for these specials in time. Please also note, that all compositions, scores, parts etc. have to be made available to impuls 2021 without charge for these programs, including rehearsals, possibly also performances at the impuls Festival and recordings made for archive reasons, and, if of interest, also to other impuls participants 2021 for reasons of studies, even if not mentioned explicitly below with each special program anyway.

As - due to the ongoing COVID-19-pandemic - impuls needs to be postponed into August 2021 in total now.
Please note, that the original special offers are thus partly undergoing changes (new date of course, but also new deadlines for handing in application, partly also change of artists a.o.) and will still be extended during the next weeks, possibly also months.

Certainly all material handed in already for the February edition for special programs, that move into August or that are taken over by new tutors and choaches now, will be included in the current corresponding calls (so please donnot resend any material, that you already submitted).

Selected participants:

Yuval Adler, Raphaël Belfiore, Juta Pranulytė, Valentin Schaff, Aled Smith

With Peter Ablinger one of the most profiled composers is tutoring at impuls. His artistic work is diverse. It includes the visual, installations, texts, conceptual, performative and situational works – and hereby and beyond of course music, including a lot of music on music. It involves research and statements - philosophical, perceptual-psychological, even political ones. It questions common topoi, conventions, role attributions. And it aims at fundamental questions: what is hearing, what is sound, what is music, what is time and space, what is the here and now?

In addition to the selected concept authors themselves, instrumentalists from PPCM (Performance Practice in Contemporary Music) at KUG are an integral part of this workshop, who, coached also by Dimitrios Polisoidis, are actively participating in the development and realization of the pieces. PPCM is a two-year master's program respectively a one-year postgraduate course at the Kunstuniversität Graz, whose central artistic subject is supervised by Klangforum Wien as professor.

Composition participants of the impuls Academy and "Others" (sound and multimedia artists, performers, individual musicians, actors dancers, instrument designers ...) are invited to submit one or more (already existing or new) concept pieces, or precisely formulated ideas, for concept pieces for open instrumentation, whereby the concepts must be realizable with a number of 1 to 5 performers/instrumentalists. An obligatory online meeting before impuls (15.5., starting at 6 pm, Central European Time) will then offer all pre-selected participants the opportunity to discuss their pieces, ideas and proposals in detail with Peter Ablinger, Dimitrios Polisoidis and Ute Pinter/impuls and to ask any open questions (e.g. on realization possibilities). The concepts finally selected after this meeting will then be developed during the impuls Academy with the participation of PPCM students (and possibly also with the involvement of the selected concept authors) and will at least partially performed at the impuls Festival.

Application:

1.) Composers must first be registered and accepted as participants of the impuls Academy 2021, "Others" may specifically qualify for this workshop.

2.) If you would like to submit one or more concepts, or precisely formulated ideas for concepts, please send a short e-mail to office(at)impuls(dot)cc, subject: KonzeptMusik, to announce your participation in advance.

3.) Then send your concepts/concept ideas via e-mail to office(at)impuls(dot)cc by April 15th, 2021 at the latest.
Please note: The pieces must be conceived for open instrumentation and can, for example, use performance, movement, improvisation and visual elements, objects, voice or other possibilities that go beyond the classical instrumental setting. Of course, classical instrumental play can also be considered, although the specific instruments available will only be announced quite shortly before impuls. Furthermore, the pieces can be conceived for a classical stage/concert program as well as for e.g. an indoor or outdoor installation. If technical support is necessary, it must be realized with simple or self-provided resources. Event-related technical conditions must also be considered, in order to ensure realizability (also in terms of performance, duration or setting).

4.) You are welcome to include examples of works in your application, that have already been realized and follow a similar conceptual approach (please provide links to f.e.  performances, photos, concept scores, etc.).

5.) The participation in this workshop implies a time-consuming commitment and may make it impossible to actively participate in many of the other projects of the Academy. However, composers and sound artists will receive two additional individual lessons with a composition tutor (instead of three). For individual musicians, instrument makers etc. who participate in this workshop, opportunities will open up to use impuls as a general platform for exchange and networking. Individual lessons for musicians are not possible in 2021.

6.) If you need further information, please contact the impuls office at office(at)impuls(dot)cc.

All places for this special program are taken by now. Nevertheless, if interested, you can send us your application material until 1.4.2021 at the latest, which we will still take in evidence and consideration, in case places might open up again.

The French composer, director and visual artist François Sarhan is especially noted for creating his own music-theatre and multimedia works, in which he himself often performs. With his workshop “Performative Music” he picks up on a most current topic in contemporary music, reaching out for new frontiers of the traditional understanding of composition and questioning also the traditional role of musicians as mere mediator of purely audible sounds and the self-imposed limitations of their instruments .

For the impuls Academy 2021 François Sarhan offers a Special Program not only for composers, but also musicians, performers, sound and multimedia artists, dancers, actors …, holding the chance to interconnect with different backgrounds and resulting perspectives. The workshop is organised as laboratory for experimentation as well as realization of individual (and possibly also group-) projects. Artistic approaches integrating aspects such as the visual and performative will hereby open up new approaches also for the core of the composition-process itself and traditional role-models might be abandoned. Collaboration and teamwork will be called for, last but not least by sharing time, space, infrastructure, ideas and know-how amongst others.

The program is designed as group activity leading towards a final presentation of the process and works developed. Thus daily presence is obligatory, especially for the group sessions (mainly 10 am to 1 pm), which pass over to general working-sessions until 7 pm at the latest. The workshop will be open to a maximum of 12 participants.

Taking part in this workshop implies a big engagement and might make it impossible to actively participate in many of the other projects of the Academy. This also implies, that participants will not be granted the same amount of individual lessons with other tutors as regular participants, but only one more individual lesson (instead of three).

The Workshop will take place at Forum Stadtpark Graz (main floor) – check infos on venue here and ask the impuls office for pictures, floor plans and some general technical information, if really of interest at this stage.

How to apply:

1.) Preannounce your interest already on Academy registration (or whenever sure, that you want to participate) to office(at)impuls(dot)cc, concern: Performative Music (please note: Composers must be accepted as Academy participants first, sound artists may, all others can only apply for this specific workshop).

2.) Hand in the following material (as pdf to office(at)impuls(dot)cc) until October 15th, 2020 (the application period might be opened up again, update to follow) at the latest:

a.) a motivation letter for this specific workshop, mentioning also your personal expectations

b.) a description of what you would want to do in particular (be it the realization of a piece, a general collaboration, the development of a concept on spot, …)

c.) links you would like to share plus CV relevant for the topic

3.) By the end of November you will be given notification at the latest about the final selection of participants. Preference will be given to artists with experience in the performative field, however everyone interested may apply of course.

Stefan Prins . Collaboratory - CANCELLED FOR AUGUST

Special Workshop with

Stefan Prins

for creative composers-performers-sound artists

18.-28.2.2021

daily presence required

group sessions mainly from 10.00-13.00

+ afternoon working periods

27. or 28.2021 (tbc)

final presentation

esc medien kunst labor

co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union

Collaboratory is an 11-day intensive workshop for creative composers-performers-sound artists coached by Stefan Prins, which has the following foci:

1.) developing of your own work-in-progress (composition/installation/performance/…) through

a.) process of dialogue with and feedback from all participants in daily presentations and group discussions, moderated by Stefan Prins

b.) one-on-one sessions with Stefan Prins

c.) experimentation at the gallery space esc medien kunst labor

2.) preparing a performance/presentation/installation of your work-in-progress at a final event at esc mkl, and participating in the work of your colleagues where necessary and possible

3.) collaboratively developing and curating an overall dramaturgy/concept for the final event, in which all works are presented/performed.

The projects ideally explore/use/include „other” media/performance practices/presentation formats and make optimal use of the space, location and technical possibilities of the gallery space (see below for information and fotos on esc mkl).

4.) collaboration is a crucial element of this workshop: the selected artists not only share one space and equipment, but they also share thoughts, energy, inspiration. This also has social and political dimensions. In a world in which the most important issues are more and more unfolding on a global scale (pandemics, ecological threats, economical models, ...), collaboration is of crucial importance to be able to tackle those issues successfully. Though this is not obligatory, it is encouraged that the proposed projects thematize the concept of collaboration in some way.

Planning:

- 10.00-13.00: daily group sessions (attendance obliged!), in which (first part of the week) each participant presents/contextualizes his/her project, taking part in a dialogue and feedback process with the entire group and (last part of the week) developing and curating an overall dramaturgy/concept for the final concert, in which all works are presented/performed

- afternoon until +- 6 pm: working on your project in the gallery space + individual sessions with Stefan Prins (time slots will be filled in the course of the week)

- first presentation planned within the impuls Festival

Who can apply:

We are looking particularly for adventurous composers-performers-sound artists working in the fields of composition/performance/sound art/installation/…, who want to develop a project of their own AND are willing to fully engage in a week, in which collaboration is central.

The applicants are responsible for performing/presenting their work, for which they can draw on help from the other participants. In extremis it’s also possible to collaborate with other participants from the Academy, though that would be your own responsibility (please note, that other participants might already be heavily engaged in other Academy activities and their availability limited).

Taking part in this workshop implies a big engagement and might make it impossible to actively participate in other projects of the Academy. This also implies that „Collaboratory” participants will not be granted the same amount of individual lessons, but only one additional individual lesson with a composition tutor (instead of three).

The workshop will be open to a maximum of 12 participants, selected by Stefan Prins.

How to apply:

1.) Preannounce your interest already on Academy registration (or whenever sure, that you want to participate) to office(at)impuls(dot)cc, concern: Collaboratory.

2.) Please send the following information to office(at)impuls(dot)cc until October 15th, 2020 at the latest:

a.) CV / bio

b.) short (max. 1 page) motivation letter to participate in this workshop

c.) short letter including the following information: at least one and maximum 3 links to online audio/video documentation of works of yours (dropbox/other cloudservers are also possible), that represent your current work best, and ideally also show work on similar collaborative/transdisciplinary work + short description of the project you want to work on at the workshop and a preliminary technical rider of the needed material (check with the impuls office for tech rider of the esc mkl / please be aware that the available equipment might have to be shared amongst the participants and for special needs or equipment and material that is not available at esc mkl you will have to provide it yourself!)

Info on the Gallery Space: esc medien kunst labor:

esc mkl is positioned in the very centre of Graz and at three sides is opening up to the city through its frontlines made out of glass. With this specific architectural feature the esc mkl herefore encourages to open up, explore and include the city with its sounds, architecture, population and social, geopolitical … conditionalities in the new works to be developed during the workshop. Also the mission statement of the esc mkl could serve as additional source of inspiration and as starting point (esc mkl: “the central endeavor of the esc mkl is the production of art; a central focus hereby lies on the exact observation and seismographic understanding of artistic processes, which capture socio-political developments (information and biotechnology, socioeconomic systems …) and new technologies (hard- und software).

Introduction to the Inter_agency project and workshops by utrumque + Artemi-Maria Gioti

18.8.2021: afternoon @ tbc / online: 1st meeting Sounding Places

19.8.-21.8.2021: 1st venue / with presentation

22.8.-24.8.2021: 2nd venue / with presentation

25.8.-27.8.2021: 3rd venue / Cube with presentation

in cooperation with IEM, the research project Inter_agency (FWF, AR 483) and the NAVET center at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology

In collaboration with the workshop participants and invited artists, the duo utrumque will coach a series of three site-specific acoustic explorations and activations at various venues in the city of Graz. For that purpose, each place will be explored acoustically, aesthetically, and conceptually to form a basis for collective site-specific interventions. Each three day workshop period starts with a day of discourse, where we engage one of the invited artists in a symposium like setting. The second day is hands on compositional work where one or more site specific pieces are devised. On the third and final day of the workshop, the results of these explorations will be made accessible to the public.

The workshops are targeted at anyone interested in the way the acoustics of a site and the people populating it may shape the music that can take place. In that vein, focusing the artistic sensibility on the interaction of the site’s affordances with the audience’s agency is expected to lead to a heightened sense of presence in musiking. The research practice of utrumque informing these workshops, which are part of the ongoing research themselves, is closely aligned with the concerns of the PEEK project Inter_agency funded by the FWF (AR 483). Inter_agency investigates the various notions of agency in live electronic music composition.

Sounding Places is meant for composers, instrumentalists, and sound artists. You do not need to have experience with audio technology, but it may be an advantage. All devices necessary for the workshop (loudspeakers, microphones, analogue signal processors) will be provided. Your role in the workshop will be to individually or collectively compose a sketch, piece, or installation. For further clarifications do not hesitate to contact us via email at contact(at)utrumque(dot)com.

How to apply:

1.) If you want to participate, please register for the impuls Academy 2021 first and preannounce your interest in this workshop (concern: Sounding Places). Composers must be accepted as Academy participants first, sound artists and instrumentalists can apply only for this specific workshop.

2.) The workshop will be repeated three times and while the iterations will be similar in structure, i.e. symposium - hands on work - concert, they will be held on different sites and involve different invited guest artists. Thus, the discussions, experiences and results will vary between iterations. Applicants are free to apply to one, two or all three of the iterations, allowing for combinations with other impuls activities or other scheduling preferences.

3.) Please submit your workshop application via email to office(at)impuls(dot)cc and contact(at)utrumque(dot)com by April 30th, 2021 (formerly: October 1st, 2020) at the latest: Include

a.) contact and biographical information

b.) a brief description of your musical practice, audio and video examples are most welcome as links

c.) a statement motivating your participation in the workshop

d.) The workshop is divided into 3 independent modules, Feb 19-21, 22-24, 25-27, similar in content but differing locale and invited artist. Please indicate how many modules you would like to attend. We may contact you during the application process and will inform you by November 1st if we can offer you a place in the workshop.

4.) Taking part in this workshop implies a big engagement and might make it impossible to actively participate in many other projects, at least during the workshop-days. In general one module of this workshop is equivalent to one individual tutor´s lesson; if taking part in all three of them, one more individual tutor´s lesson will be granted to the participating composers and sound artists however.

For individual musicians, taking part in this workshop will open up the chance, to use impuls as general platform for exchange and networking. However, as impuls 2021 does not offer individual training for musicians, it might make sense to shorten the stay, unless taking part in all three modules anyway (so please discuss length of stay and relating costs with impuls, at least when accepted for this workshop).

in cooperation with IEM and the research project Inter_agency

Selected participants:

Simon Bahr, Luca Guidarini, Eduardo Loría Lazcano, Miki Manabe, Claudio Panariello, Paolo Piaser, Antonis Rouvelas, Brandon Lincoln Snyder, Mariana Vieira

This workshop is aimed at composers, sound artists, instrument designers and performers, who wish to learn more about machine learning and integrate it in their creative practice. During the workshop, participants will become familiar with various types of machine learning algorithms (including supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms) and learn to apply them in music-related tasks. Among other applications, participants will learn how to train a machine learning algorithm to recognize different timbres, control a synthesis engine using live video and find patterns in large sound databases. As part of the workshop, participants will develop their own machine learning projects and present them in concert. They will receive individual support by the workshop instructor on both technical and aesthetic/compositional aspects of their projects. No prior machine learning knowledge is required for participation, but familiarity with at least one audio programming language (e.g. Pd, Max, or Supercollider) is desirable.

The first part of the workshop will consist of an introduction to different types of machine learning algorithms, including hands-on experiments and practical exercises. In the second part, participants will be free to develop their own projects, i.e., performances or compositions involving the use of machine learning algorithms, and will receive group and individual supervision by the workshop instructor. During this part of the workshop, participants will be expected to attend daily group meetings and will have access to the facilities and necessary equipment in order to work on their projects. Participants can choose to work on individual or group projects, but collaboration with instrumentalists from the Academy will not be possible. The compositions and performances developed during the workshop will be presented at a final concert at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) of the University of Music and Performing Arts of Graz on August 24th, 2021.

How to apply:

1.) If you want to participate in the workshop, please register for the impuls Academy 2021 first and announce our interest in this workshop (concern: Machine Learning) to office(at)impuls(dot)cc (composer must be accepted as Academy participants first, sound artists may, performers and instrument designers can only apply for this specific workshop)

2.) Please send the following material to office(at)impuls(dot)cc and gioti(at)iem(dot)at by April 15th, 2021 (originally October 1st, 2020) at the latest:

a.) A motivation letter (500-1000 words) explaining why you are interested in machine learning and how it relates to your compositional/artistic work,

b.) A short CV (max. 2 pages), including programming knowledge and

c.) Links to 2 previous works (audio or video recordings, scores, sketches etc.).

3.) If you have any content questions, please address them to gioti(at)iem(dot)at directly.

4.) The selected applicants will be notified by email by May 15th, 2021 (originally October 31st, 2020) at the latest.

6.) Taking part in this workshop implies a big engagement and might make it impossible, to actively participate in many other projects of the Academy. Composers and sound artists will however be granted one more individual lesson with a composition tutor (instead of three). For individual performers and instrument designers, taking part in this workshop, chances will be opened up to use impuls as general platform for exchange and networking.

Facilities and Equipment:

The workshop will be held at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics of the University of Music and Performing Arts of Graz, one of Europe's leading research institutions in the fields of computer music, acoustics and audio engineering. The host institution will provide its state-of-the-art facilities, including studios and a concert venue equipped with a 3D Higher Order Ambisonics system. Audio hardware, such as audio interfaces, MIDI interfaces, microphones, speakers etc. will be provided by the host institution. Participants will need to provide their own laptop computers and any additional specialized equipment they wish to use in their projects (e.g., sensors).

This workshop is held in collaboration with the research project Inter_agency, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (PEEK AR 483) and hosted at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) of the University of Music and Performing Arts of Graz. Inter_agency addresses the desideratum of human-computer symbiosis in composed electro-instrumental music and aims to enhance human-machine communication in compositions for acoustic instruments and electronics by incorporating intelligent agent-based systems in them.

10.00: First meeting for all participants at

KUG . Reiterkaserne .

Ira-Malaniuk-Hall

Selected participants:

Yuval Adler, Elena Arbonies Jauregui, Christina Arcos Cano, Anna Arkushyna, Simon Bahr, Omer Barash, Simone Baron, Raphaël Belfiore, Sarah Brabo-Durand, Miguel Filipe, Ana Gnjatović, Anna Grenzner, Nilufar Habibian, June Young Kim, Alexey Kokhanov, Eduardo Loría Lazcano, Nina Maghsoodloo, Connor McLean, Leonardo Mezzalira, Víctor Morató, Léa Moullet, Myrto Nizami, Ana Ostojić, Alyona Pynzenyk, Aigerim Seilova, Jennifer Seubel, Elisabeth Shearon, Emil Vijgen Strøbæk, Itziar Viloria, Manuel Zwerger

Carola Bauckholt's imaginative further development of “New Music Theater” - founded by her teacher Mauricio Kagel - occupies a very special aesthetic position in contemporary music. The boundaries between visual arts, musical theater and concert music are often dissolving, the everyday and the incidental are brought into focus, comic elements, the bizarre and unexpected as well as noisy sounds from the environment and nature are not excluded, perception and understanding are questioned.

During her workshop at impuls, musical, intermedial and music-theatrical ideas will be developed for open-air sites, followed by collective realization and reflection of site-specific short compositions. „Instant Composing“ is a one-day workshop open to all impuls Academy participants (be it composers, musicians, performer or others), no matter whether with already active improvisation experience and practise or newcomer. Instruments can be brought along, but are not obligatory at all.

How to apply:

Please note, that the workshop is limited to a maximum of 30 participants, so sign up quickly by sending a short email to office(at)impuls(dot)cc, concern: “Instant Composing” (first come, first serve). No further application material or preconceived concepts needed.

12.30-14.30: lunch

KUG . MUMUTH .

Studiobühne

Due to flood damages relocated to:
KUG . TIP . Theater im Palais

Selected participants:
Alyssa Aska, Omer Barash, Marco Benetti, Jieun Jeong, Jaeduk Kim, Daria Scia

On top of premiering 5 new impuls commissions on February 17th, 2021, Klangforum Wien and Bas Wiegers offer a full day with Reading Sessions for young composer participants of the impuls Academy in August, where, amongst others, questions on formal and esthetic aspects, notation and instrumentation are discussed.

How to apply:

1.) You have to register and be accepted as participant for the impuls Academy 2021 first. Please preannounce your interest in this special program (concern: Klangforum) to the impuls office (office(at)impuls(dot)cc) or already with your initial Academy registration.

2.) The works can, but must not necessarily be written for this specific occasion. Also sketches or even part of works can be handed in. Of course your work also does not have to include all instruments mentioned in paragraph 3.), but can be written for a smaller instrumentation. However it needs to convey the character of an ensemble piece - thus no small (chamber) music pieces will be accepted.

3.) The instruments available for the reading sessions are as follows (one musician per instrument only!): 1x flute, 1x oboe, 1x clarinet, 1x bassoon, 1x saxophone, 1x horn, 1x trumpet, 1x trombone, 1x accordion, 1x harp, 1x piano, 1x percussion, 1x violin, 1x viola, 1x cello, 1x double bass

4) As to percussion: only a small percussion set will be made available by Klangforum Wien and impuls. In case your piece should really require any other percussion instruments, you need to supply them yourself; same holds true for specific sound objects or other devices.

5.) Please also note that neither electronic equipment nor amplification is available.

6.) Scores (printed or well readable hand writing) must be sent as pdf to office(at)impuls(dot)cc until April 30th, 2021 (originally: November 15th, 2020) at the latest.

7.) A commission, consisting of members of Klangforum Wien, will then choose some of the works handed in. The composers selected will be given notification by June 15th, 2021 (originally: the end of 2020), and might be asked to also deliver the parts until July 15th, 2021 (originally: January 15th, 2021) as pdf to office(at)impuls(dot)cc. With Trio Abstrakt impuls is hosting a Cologne-based ensemble for contemporary music, that has dedicated itself to recent repertoire for their specific instrumentation, but also music theatre pieces, improvisation and performances without instruments. The trio's musicians are also keen explorers of their respective instruments and avid improvisers – thus, dedicated pieces for the trio often make use of their unique personal sound palette.

As first step Trio Abstrakt is calling for scores amongst the composer participants of impuls 2021. From the pieces handed in the trio will then

a.) make a selection to work on a few pieces during the impuls Academy and possibly also perform them at the impuls Festival and to

b.) give feedback also to the other composers on their works as submitted.

How to apply:

1.) Composers have to register and be accepted as participant for impuls 2021 first.

2.) If you intend to hand in a piece, please send a short message to office(at)impuls(dot)cc to announce your participation already early in advance (concern: Trio Abstrakt Call). Please then hand in your piece per email (score as pdf / transposed for saxophone) to office(at)impuls(dot)cc) until April 15th, 2021 at the latest. Please then bring along three printed copies in August.

3.) As to instrumentation: Please note that there are neither electronics nor amplification available. As to percussion: please point out all instruments needed beforehand to us (under info(at)trioabstrakt(dot)com), in case you intend to write a new piece. Please note, that in case your piece should require specific sound objects or other specific devices, you will have to supply them yourself. In general, try to stick to the „usual“ percussion instruments you would find normally in the percussion department of a conservatory.

As to saxophone: Soprano, alto and tenor are available. Please also note, that in case any piano preparation is planned, you have to make sure, it will by no means harm the piano.

4.) Pieces may be newly written or already existing ones. The duration however should not exceed 15 minutes. Trio pieces are preferred – however, Trio Abstrakt will also accept duo pieces for one of the 3 possible constellations.

5.) A selection of pieces, to be actually worked on by Trio Abstrakt, will be announced by end of May, 2021 at the latest. The scores will be made available to Trio Abstrakt and impuls without charge during impuls 2021 for rehearsals, possibly also performance, recordings made for archive reasons, and if of interest, also to other impuls participants for reasons of studies.

6.) If you need further information please contact the impuls office at office(at)impuls(dot)cc.

co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union

Following the pianistic tradition of the great virtuosos of the 19th and early 20th century, the central idea for this workshop-call is to evaluate, how the piano can still be used in such ways in the 21st century. Using all developments, that have been created between the golden era of piano and nowadays, such as the exploration of new kinds of virtuosity through extended techniques, is for sure one of the possible approaches to this topic.

Alfredo Ovalles, pianist of Black Page Orchestra, whose performances also as soloist have been described as „ ...unusual, great, and far from the canon“ (O-Ton Magazine), is offering a two-step-workshop at impuls, which includes a feedback-discussion-meeting plus concrete work on selected pieces, that might even lead to a public presentation.

How to apply:
1.) You have to register and be accepted as participant of the impuls Academy 2021.

2.) Please announce your interest in handing in one or more pieces to office(at)impuls(dot)cc (concern: Piano Virtuosity) and submit them as pdfs until April 30th, 2021 (originally: October 30th, 2020) at the latest. Please note, that the pieces must not be older than 5 years (written 2015 or later), should not be longer than 8 minutes max., must be written for piano solo (no electronics available, any form of preparation or similar must not harm the instrument) and must relate to the topic (please add a short written statement on your approach in this respect).

3.) A selection of pieces will be announced by June 15th, 2021 (originally: December 15th, 2020) at the latest, however both the feedback-meeting and concrete workshop-rehearsals will be open to all participants interested.

The intention is to develop and finalize a selection of works in intense exchange between composer and performer. On top Samuel Toro Pérez will meet up with all composers for a feedback-round on their submissions.

By now using the voice together with the flute is a very common feature in contemporary repertoire already. But in this workshop this phenomenon will be explored inside the duo formation of flute and double bass, and new and exciting ways of "extended instrumental composing" looked for. Starting out from sketches/proposals, flutist Elisa Azzarà and double bass player Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka, both musicians of Schallfeld Ensemble, will develop miniature pieces (1-3 min.) together with the composers, that explore the possibilities of the voice as an expansion of their instruments, looking for ways of combination, fusion or differentiation in their sonic potential.

Composers are asked to take into account, that besides basic vocal training, the two musicians are not professional (classical) singers, yet are open to explore and experiment also with extended vocal techniques. For specific questions beforehand about vocal range etc., please get in touch with them directly (schallfeld(dot)ensemble(at)gmail(dot)com, concern: Instruments + Voices).

Timeframe and Workshop-structure:

After a selection of participants, the first phase of preparation of soundmaterial and techniques and the elaboration of the draft pieces is done online already before impuls in close contact with composers and instrumentalists. Besides individual work, the duo aims to do online group sessions to create exchange and learn together. During the impuls Academy, the pieces will then be rehearsed and discussed together with the musicians and composers, resulting at least partially in a workshop presentation. The number of participants is subject to the time available and thus the number of places is limited.

How to apply:

1.) Composers must be registered and accepted as participants of the impuls Academy 2021 to be considered, and announce their interest in the programm to office(at)impuls(dot)cc beforehand (concern: Instruments + Voices)

2.) Please then submit until April 30th, 2021 (originally: October 1st, 2020) at the latest to office(at)impuls(dot)cc and schallfeld.ensemble(at)gmail(dot)com

a.) a recording (or excerpt of recording) of a piece you consider representative for you and your work as Link, and as pdfs:

b.) a short exposé explaining your motivation (why would you like to work with the duo on this topic) and your concept for a short miniature piece (which finally will be about 1-3 min. in length)

c.) sketches for your proposed piece, if already available

3.) Notification about selection will be given until June 2021 (originally: November 1st, 2020) at the latest.

Georg Vogel . Clavitone . Presentation + workshop talk + try-out

with Georg Vogel

18.8.2021
17.30

KUG . Mumuth . Proberaum

Due to flood damages relocated to:
KUG . TIP . Theater im Palais

Selected participants:

Yuval Adler, Griffin Brown, Noëmi Haffner, Uršula Jašovec, Patrick Friel

Georg Vogel eludes conventional style definitions and operates just as virtuously in jazz and traditional musical forms as he does in experimental and contemporary contexts. Especially in the expansion of the rhythmic spectrum and the improvisational handling of it, he is to be recognized as an exceptional pianist and sound researcher.

With the clavitone, Georg Vogel presents a self-constructed key instrument with 31 tones per octave. The key division is hereby based on the principle of lower and upper keys, whereby the latter ones are subdivided several times following the extended meantone tuning.

After a short introduction of the instrument and its possibilities, Georg Vogel will open up the presentation towards a workshop talk and try-out for sketches, questions and ideas submitted in advance.

Application:

In order to make the meeting a more productive one, specific questions, but also sketches and ideas, involving the clavitone should be sent in advance (deadline: May 15th, 2021, subject: clavitone) to info(at)georgvogel(dot)net as well as to office(at)impuls(dot)cc. As the number of participants is limited, pre-registration is necessary (first come first serve for those, who submit questions, sketches, ideas / passive listeners welcome upon availability on site).
