Clemens Gadenstätter, composition

Gadenstätter, Clemens (b. 1966, Zell am See, Salzburg). Austrian composer of chamber, ensemble and orchestra works that have been successfully performed throughout Europe; he is also active as an intermedia artist.

Mr. Gadenstätter first studied transverse flute with Wolfgang Schulz and composition with Erich Urbanner at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna from 1984-92 and graduated with excellence. He finished his studies in composition with Helmut Lachenmann at the Stuttgarter Musikhochschule from 1992-95.

During his student years, he was active as a flautist in numerous ensembles and orchestras (including with Klangforum Wien from 1989-92). In 1990, he and Florian E. Müller co-founded the ensemble neue musik – wien, which performs a wide variety of new works, including ones involving intermedia. He has also been involved in the organization of numerous concert series and new music events, including the six-day multimedia festival SALON13 in collaboration with Lisa Spalt (since 2000).

The Musikbiennale Berlin, Vienna Modern, ensemble recherche, Klangforum Wien, ORF, the Salzburg Festival, Wien Modern, Musik der Jahrhunderte Stuttgart, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Steirischer Herbst, the SWF Baden-Baden, the Trio Accanto, Ensemble Modern, the Wiener Konzerthaus-Gesellschaft etc. have commissioned works from him.

In addition, Neue Vokalsolisten Stuttgart, violinist Ernst Kovacic, guitar player Jürgen Ruck, flautist Eva Furrer, vocalists Salome Kammer, Anna Maria Pammer, pianist Florian E. Müller, pianist Yukiko Sugawara, and saxophonist Markus Weiss have also performed his works.

Among the conductors of his works are Sian Edwards, Dennis Russell Davies, Patrik Davin, Peter Eötvös, Beat Furrer, Pascal Rophé, Jürg Henneberger, Johannes Kalitzke, Ernst Kovacic, Dominique My, and Arturo Tamayo.

Ensembles and orchestras that have played his works including Ensemble Modern, Jack Quartet, Klangforum Wien, ensemble recherché, trio recherché, L’instant Donnée – Paris, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, trio accanto, Ensemble Mosaik, the Hilversum Chamber Orchestra RSB Berlin, SWR Orchestra Freiburg and Baden Baden, RSO Vienna, KNM Berlin the ensemble für neue musik zürich, Ensemble Nikel, Asamisimasa, Ensemble on line Vienna etc.

Among his awards are the Arbeitsstipendium from the city of Vienna (1987, 1994), a prize at the Forum junger Komponisten (1992), the Staatsstipendium der Republik Österreich für Komposition (1993, 1999), and the Jahresstipendium des Landes Salzburg für Komposition (1995). More recently, he has received the Publicity-Preis of the SKE-Fond (1997), the Förderungspreis from the City of Vienna (1997) and the Erste Preis (2003), the DAAD “scolarship berlin artist residance” 2006.

His works have been heard at numerous important Austrian festivals, including the Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik, the Hörgänge (which featured a portrait concert in 2001 and 2003), the Musikprotokoll, the Österreich Heute, the Salzburg Festival, the Wien Modern …

His works have been heard elsewhere at Darmstadt, the Donaueschinger Musiktage (2001, 2005), the Forum junger Komponisten (Cologne, Dresden, Leipzig), the ISCM World Music Days (Stockholm), Musica Nova (Sofia), and seachange (Aberdeen, which also featured a portrait concert in 2001), Ultraschall Berlin 2006, Salzburg Festival (1999 and 2003), Ultima (Oslo), Moving Sounds Festival (New York). In addition, his music has been performed at the Musikbiennale Berlin, Nuovi Spazi Musicali, Schoenberg und die Folgen (Duisburg), and the Wires Performance Center for New and Experimental Music (Los Angeles).

From 1995-2000, he was editor of the twice-yearly music journal ton, which was published by the Austrian section of ISCM. Since 2007 he is co-editor of the book series „musiktheorien der gegenwart“, published by Pfau/Saarbrücken.

His books are tag day. ein schreibspiel, with Lisa Spalt (edition gegensaetze, 2000) and Stellwerk I, with Ilse Kilic, Lisa Spalt and Fritz Widhalm (edition ch, 2002); he has also written essays that have appeared in numerous publications.

He currently teaches at the universities in Graz (since 1998) and Vienna (since 1995). Since 2003 he teaches as a professor for music theory , analysis and composition at the music university in Graz.
