The constant evolution and artistic openness of Alfredo Ovalles as a musician make it difficult to categorize him. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, the pianist has explored many different musical worlds. The combination of his classical upbringing, in parallel with his experience playing in rock and pop bands in Caracas made music seem like one single world, where borders are very blurry and performances in one genre inform the approach to a different, seemingly unrelated kind of stage.

In the course of his career, Alfredo has explored classical and electronic music, and roamed the field of contemporary music. His curiosity for the new and love for experimentation make him stand out, and have led him to many musical places off the beaten track.

Performing in some of the most prestigious festivals in Europe, such as Wien Modern, Transart Festival in Bolzano, and the Warsaw Autumn Festival, his collaboration with The Black Page Orchestra has led him from performing Stockhausen in an abandoned submarine pier in Croatia to premiering ensemble and solo works in venues such as the Lutoslawski Hall of the Polish National Radio or the Wiener Konzerthaus. Composers with whom Alfredo has collaborated include names such as Jorge Snchez-Chiong, John Zorn, Roberto Sierra, and Mirela Ivičević.

This short program conveys an idea of Alfredo Ovalles' artistic openness and his pianistic excellence.

Alessandro Baticci amplified flutes, live-electronics

Rafał Zalech digitalized viola, live-electronics

Nimikry Dichotomy II (2021), installative performance for digitalized viola, amplified flutes and live-electronics

Nimikry is a composer-performer duo working with self-designed augmented instruments. Its music combines technological innovation and sonic research on the highest level. The duo developed digital mapping systems as well as new amplification methods for its acoustic instruments and uses these technologies for new artistic solutions.

The digital mapping system allows Nimikry to control virtual sounds as well as any musical parameter with the acoustic instruments, in real-time. This allows a unique control over the electronic processes at any moment. The duos sound world is dictated by post-avantgarde criteria and the globalization of musical cultures.

In 2021, impuls welcomes Schallfeld Ensemble as Ensemble in Residency and Junior Tutor at its Academy. Through several Calls for Score and special programs, Schallfeld is in close exchange with impuls Academy participants, sharing its expertise, developing new repertoire, and also benefiting from the Academy offers itself. Twice it presents itself as an ensemble (and also several times in solo and duo constellations) at the impuls Festival. With this program, Schallfeld Ensemble not only gives the Austrian premiere of a composition commissioned from Pierluigi Billone, but also presents two other works by internationally renowned composers teaching at impuls.

Schallfeld is an international ensemble for contemporary music based in Graz. The group sparks the interest of its audience by its vivid virtuosity and refined chamber music sound, paired with interpretations that pay special attention to concert format, creating events that adapt to the specific venue while aiming for a new dimension of listening. The ensemble was founded in 2013 by alumni of Klangforum Wien and composition students of Kunstuniversitt Graz. It currently consists of musicians from 8 nationalities and reflects the diversity and different interests of its members in its artistic direction. In the last few years, Schallfeld has been able to establish itself on international stages through exciting programming with a focus on young composers, innovative concert-stagings as well as through the quality of its collective improvisations and innovative use of live-electronics. Schallfeld sees its mission in bringing music of international young composers to Austria and acting as an ambassador for new music production abroad. Besides its own concert cycle in Graz, Schallfeld is regularly guest in festivals in Austria and abroad, such as Wien Modern, impuls Graz, Klangspuren Schwaz, Darmstdter Ferienkurse, Romaeuropa (Rome), Bludenzer Tagen zeitgemsser Musik (Bludenz), Signale (Graz), Afekt (Estonia), Poznan Musical Spring (Poland), EMA (Spain), Daegu International Contemporary Music Festival (South Korea). In 2016 and 2017 Schallfeld has been selected by the Ministry of Foreign/cultural Affairs as rappresentative of NASOM (New Austrian Sound of Music), a program designed to promote young Austrian artists internationally and, since 2015, is Ulysses- Network Ensemble in Residence. Schallfeld was Ensemble in Residency during the Darmstdter Ferienkursen (2016), impuls (2015, 2017, 2019, 2021), the University of California San Diego (2020), Harvard University (2020) and has a fix collaboration with the IEM Graz since 2015. The ensemble is also involved in pedagogical activities and collaborative theater projects for children and adults. Schallfeld is funded by the municipality of Graz, the federal state of Styria, the Austrian federal Government and receives generous support from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and the iem (Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics) Graz. Past projects by Schallfeld have also received grants by the EU (Youth in Action), Music Austria (MICA) and KulturKontakt Austria.
